Smoke Testing & Certification
Prove your flue is sound and drawing safely — with a documented result.
A smoke test is the definitive way to prove a flue is doing its job — drawing properly and venting entirely to the outside with no leakage into the room or neighbouring flues. We carry out draw tests, which confirm the flue pulls smoke away cleanly, and, where needed, evacuation or pressure tests using a smoke pellet to check the integrity of the flue between floors. It is the test insurers, home buyers and landlords tend to ask for, and the one you want before commissioning a newly installed or relined appliance. You get a documented result you can hand straight to whoever has asked for it.

Frequently asked questions
- What does a smoke test actually prove?
- Two things: that the flue draws — pulling smoke up and away from the appliance — and that it is sound, venting entirely to the outside without leaking into the room, adjacent flues or the roof space. Passing both is strong evidence the flue is safe to use.
- When do I need a smoke test?
- Commonly when buying or selling a house, before letting a property, after a new liner or appliance is fitted, or whenever there is a suspicion a flue is leaking — for example if you can smell smoke upstairs or in another room when the fire is lit.
- What is the difference between a draw test and an evacuation test?
- A draw test uses smoke to confirm the flue pulls away cleanly under normal conditions. An evacuation or pressure test seals the flue and uses a smoke pellet to check its integrity — whether it holds smoke in and vents only to the outside. We use whichever the situation calls for, and sometimes both.
- My flue failed a smoke test — what now?
- A fail usually points to a blockage, a gap in the flue or a failed liner. We will explain what the test showed and where the problem is likely to be, and set out your options — from clearing a blockage to relining. We will not certify a flue that is not safe.
- Do I get documentation I can give my insurer or solicitor?
- Yes. We provide a documented test result and certificate you can pass straight to your insurer, solicitor or letting agent. It records what was tested and the outcome, which is exactly what they are usually after.
